Glow Inside and Out With These Glow-tastic Foods

Glowing This Summer Is Not Just Thanks To Vitamin D

The saying “you are what you eat” might be clichéd, but it’s never rung more true than when looking at your skin and its health. Being the largest organ we have, it’s constantly working overtime to protect us from the harmful environments we find ourselves in every day. On average, we’re exposed to the sun’s harmful radiation, pollution, cleaning products, bacteria, dust and other not-so-nice “skin challenges” on a daily basis… and our skin is protecting us through all of it. So, why not look after it by simply eating better? With a few simple adjustments to our diet, we’re able to give our skin the boost it needs to keep protecting us AND slow down the process of ageing. It’s a lot easier than it sounds and the benefits are numerous.

Moving towards a healthier way of eating will not only improve our skin but our overall health as well. The foods mentioned in this blog are easy to get (some are more in-season than others) and will help to increase our intake of antioxidants, vitamins B, C and E and selenium – all of which function as support for our skin. Omega 3’s have also been included (most commonly found in fish) and are a key ingredient in minimising inflammation- a culprit that can lead to cell degradation over time.

To boost your skin even further, we’d suggest one of our incredible treatments, such as our IPL Skin Rejuvenation or Deep Pore Skin Facial. They’ll give your skin that extra bit of help to truly look like the front cover of a magazine!

So, get out that shopping list and get glowing!

WATER

This is a straightforward one, and it’s FREE! Drinking more water is the simplest way to boost your natural glow and keep your skin and other tissues functioning at their best. We suggest around 8 cups of water (around 2 litres) a day but it all depends on the person and how active you are – the more active you are the more you’ll need to drink.

To change it up, try adding a few items to a jug of water that you keep in your fridge. We like the citrus or berry options but you can also add mint, cucumber (also a great source of water as a nibble snack) or a sugar-free flavouring.

FATTY FISH

Fatty fish such as salmon, mackerel or herring are excellent foods for healthy skin. As well as being delicious, these fish are rich in antioxidants and Omega-3s, helping to combat inflammation and keeping your skin supple, moisturised and capable of combating the daily challenges it faces. And, if you suffer from dry skin, a good dose of Omega-3s might even help to rid you of that (dry skin is usually because of a deficiency of Omega-3s). Fatty fish is also packed full of vitamin E (an incredibly important antioxidant) and zinc (which is a mineral vital for regulating inflammation, overall skin health and the production of new skin cells).

Don’t enjoy fish? Then there’s a supplement option that you can take that’s available at all pharmacies or health shops – just ask them for the best option for you.

GARLIC

Being a good addition to your favourite Italian meal aside, garlic and other herbs and spices can lend a hand in reducing the production of Advanced Glycation End Products (AGEs) that can cause structural changes in the skin when they start to accumulate. Luckily for you, garlic, oregano, cinnamon, cloves and ginger may help to slow down this build up and add flavour to your meals.

WATERMELON

A summer essential for those sweltering days, a cold slice of watermelon is refreshing and it’s great for your skin, too.

The high concentration of water in this delicious fruit can actually help to reduce water retention that’s linked to puffiness around the eyes and other areas. Not only does it help reduce this unwanted puff, it also has very little sugar, ensuring that it doesn’t compromise your collagen levels which can lead to lines and wrinkles (collagen maintains the elasticity of your skin and breaks down over time, which can be sped up due to an unhealthy intake of sugars).

So, grab this big ball of fruit during your next shopping excursion.

SWEET POTATOES

The potato’s sweeter cousin, this variation gives you beta carotene, an antioxidant that converts to vitamin A and plays a very important role in your health. Not only is it great for your skin but it also helps fight against free radicals (known to cause cancer), improves cognitive function over a long period of time and promotes good lung and skin health.

You can find this wonderful antioxidant in other vegetables, too, including carrots, spinach and oranges.

ALMONDS

Keen on a quick snack? Grab a handful of almonds! They’re rich in vitamin E, which is a powerful antioxidant that helps prevent signs of ageing and can even bolster your skin’s defences against skin cancer by protecting it against free radicals. This is also the perfect snack for those suffering from dry skin.

Keeping these little guys in your pantry is a sure-fire way to avoid sweets and get in as much needed vitamins in a healthy and delicious way as possible.

MANGOES

Another summer favourite, mangos are where it’s at for your skin’s health. Like sweet potatoes and other red, orange or yellow fruits and vegetables, mangoes are loaded with beta carotene, helping your skin to repair itself and even delay the appearance of wrinkles over time.

Also, since they’re packed with vitamin A, you’ll be protecting your cells and helping them regenerate faster. Have it as is or use it in a salad, smoothie or snack platter. If you’re like us then you’re not going to be getting tired of mango any time soon!

GREEN TEA

We’ve all read or heard about the benefits of green tea but did you know that it plays an important role in healing blemishes and scars? It’s packed with catechins and vitamin K, which help to lighten dark circles under your eyes (refrigerate the teabags then use on your eyes for around 15 minutes), treat rosacea (a skin condition in which your facial blood vessels enlarge, giving your cheeks and nose a flushed appearance), and assist in flushing out harmful toxins that can lead to premature ageing.

So, sip away but leave the milk out of it!

BROCCOLI

Eat your greens – a saying we probably all despised as children… however, broccoli and other green veggies are full of many vitamins and minerals important to skin health, including zinc, vitamin A and vitamin C. It’s not sounding so bad now, is it?

It also contains lutein, a carotenoid that works in a similar way to the beta carotene found in sweet potatoes, mangoes and other red, yellow and orange fruits and vegetables. Lutein helps protect your skin from oxidative damage, which can cause your skin to become dry and saggy.

Another bonus is that broccoli florets are overflowing with a special compound called sulforaphane, which has been linked to improved heart health and digestion. Eating it raw is the best option as it retains ten times more sulforaphane than if it’s cooked. If you want to cook it, though, then we’d suggest steaming it for around 3 minutes. This keeps a lot of the goodness in and gives them a gorgeous crunch.

DARK CHOCOLATE

Of course, chocolate makes it onto the list! Dark chocolate, that is.

We know you don’t need a reason to eat chocolate, but here it is: the effects of cocoa on your skin are pretty amazing. After 6 – 12 weeks of consuming cocoa powder (which is high in antioxidants) each day, studies have found that your skin gets thicker and more hydrated, less sensitive to sunburn, had better blood flow and was less rough. Combined, all of these positives help to bring more nutrients to your skin, keeping you glowing for longer.

Make sure to choose dark chocolate with at least 70% cocoa to maximise the benefits of this sweet treat and keep any added sugar to a bare minimum.
